You're Never Too Young to Exercise & Workout!

Did you know that childhood obesity currently affects 17% of all children and adolescents in the United States?  As a mom, these statistics are very concerning!

My nephew on a mini treadmill at his Mommy's gym!
As a parent of two young children (ages 9 and 12), it has always been a priority to keep them both active in sports and after-school activities.  My oldest started playing soccer when he was 3 years old, and my youngest started dance class when she was just 2 1/2 years old.

Currently, my son is in wrestling.  He has practices 2 - 3 days per week and tournaments on Saturdays.  My daughter is in a Zumba class on Tuesdays, and a swim class on Thursdays.   Cross country will be starting mid-March and they are both signed up for that already.

We also love to go for walks, ride bikes, and other fun outdoor activities.  We walk several local fun runs every Spring, including the MS Walk, Spring Dash, and Bloomsday.

Plus, video games are great for exercise and fitness, too!  Just Dance, Wii Sports, and Hula Hooping are a few of our favorites!

It's never too early to teach your children the importance of living an active lifestyle.

How do your children stay active?

First of all, I *love* that baby treadmill and the little weight set too! Too too cute!

As a mother of four children ranging in age from toddler to teens, keeping them active can be quite challenging as they've all got different abilities and interests. My two older teens are very fit. They're enrolled in the same cross fit class at school and love it so much. My 10-year old is extremely active. She lives for running, skipping, jumping as does my toddler. This past weekend we went bowling together as a family. It was a fun way for all of us to get up and get moving. Great post. It's never to early to teach kids about being active. :)

Adorable! I need a baby treadmill in our 'home gym'. :)

My kids are at the ages (4 & 5 1/2) so I just let them loose outside and they run around like the wild things... lot of running, jumping and digging.

We try to get outside to run around, jump, dig, splash, etc. when the weather is good. Wii fit for when the weather is bad.

The baby on the treadmill....cutest thing ever!

That is the cutest little treadmill ever!! We try and take family walks, and when it's nice out walking to and from school. The girls are pretty active everyday, which I love!

Adorable photo!!
My youngest is 16 and she's not been very active for a few years now and her weight shows it :(
Currently she is working out with Just Dance on the wii and the dance game on the Playstation 3, but she doesn't stick to doing it regularly! ugh! She really must lose weight.

We make sure to get 60 minutes of exercise in every day. Even if it's just a dance party in the living room. I love that baby treadmill!

My children are involved in sports - basketball, soccer, lacrosse and softball. And, we try to get to the park even in cold weather.

My daughter & I go to the gym a couple times a week. She either walks on the treadmill or we swim in the pool. During the summer we hike and walk outside.

Not only exercising but also eating right. Never too young, like you say.

And teaching good eating patterns is important too

I'm really surprised that so many children are growing up being overweight or obese. Naturally I think it's just life style factors that contribute to that, but maybe it's also the food that is being eaten. Nevertheless, it is very important to learn from an early age to be regularly active and have healthy eating habits.

I keep them busy all the time. If they aren't playing, they have chores to do.

My kids stay active just by being with my wife and I. We run, bike, swim and the boys play many sports. An active lifestyle is an important part of our daily lives and our kids don't know any different. One of their favorite things is riding bikes to the grocery store, during nice weather of course!

Our daughter goes with us on our jogs, when we do a little slow down we always let her jog along. Also she just loves to visit the park and run around!

I love this photo! It's true, too...the younger kids are when they start learning about fitness, the more likely they are to make it a priority later in life. Good for you and your family!

When my children were young they always participated in organized sports so there were plenty of practices, workout and games to keep them within a normal weight range even though it seemed they could eat us out of house and home! LOL

My 2 and 3 year olds love to exercise. Wishi could get a kid powered treadmill for my classroom. I think it would help ADHD kids or kids having trouble sitting still burn off some energy!

My children ride their bikes everyday. My 11 year old son eats a lot but stays skinny as a rail because he's always on the go.
