Frugal Summer Craft Idea: Pinecone Bird Feeders

We have more than our fair share of pinecones in our yard, they seem to be never-ending!  My kids have always enjoyed making pinecone bird feeders. I thought the kids would make one or two each but they ended up making a total of 10! They were having so much fun that they didn't want to stop! Not only did the kids have a blast, but they were so easy for them to make! I gave them each a spoon and they got busy.

Here's how to make a pinecone bird feeder

Take a pinecone and cover it with peanut butter, then roll it in bird seed. Tie a string around the top of the pinecone and hang it. Simple, easy, done!

Let's add the peanut butter

Tips to Prevent Car Theft

Any time my family travels, thoughts of our luggage, my purse, and even our vehicle getting stolen are always in the back of my mind.  I know that our belongings could potentially be stolen anywhere, anytime... even at home, but the fear of having them stolen while away from home or even out of the country causes more of a concern.

Last summer we took our family vacation in Canada and drove our vehicle.  I will admit that I was a little nervous traveling so far away from home, our family and friends, and out of the country.  What if something were to happen?  We would not have anyone close by that would be able to come to our rescue.  Especially not quickly or easily.

I know that nothing is fool-proof or guaranteed, but here are a few of the easiest ways to protect yourself against car theft:

Keep your vehicle locked!  This simple step could make a big difference.

Have a car alarm or anti-theft device installed!

Keep valuables out of site!  Put valuables in the trunk, under the seat or cover them with your jacket or a blanket.

Five Summer Vacations Every Child Should Experience

School is almost out and that means summer vacations, camping, trips to the beach and so much more!  Many of my most memorable childhood memories are of family vacations, the things we saw and the places we visited.  As a result of our family getaways, I've been to 35 states, Canada and Mexico.

I'm going to share five of my most memorable and favorite summer getaway destinations and activities with you!

1.  The Oregon Coast

The wind in your hair, the sand between your toes (and everywhere else) is simply amazing!  The rolling waves, the sound of the seagulls, the smell of the fresh, salty air, finding seashells.  There is nothing quite like spending a day playing in the sand and the waves.

2.  Car Races

It's an amazing (and weird) feeling that engulfs your body as the cars roar and race around the track.  Watching the excitement on the faces of the kids as the cars race, burn out, squeal the tires and even crash is entertaining in itself. Possibly even more fun and entertaining than watching the races themselves!

3.  Camping

Moms Rule! Dollar General Every Day Heroes Campaign Giveaway

Being a mom is the most amazing honor.  I love my mom and am lucky to be a mom to two wonderful children, a job that I wouldn't trade for anything on earth!

In celebration of Mother’s Day, Procter & Gamble® has teamed up with Dollar General to honor moms, Every Day Heroes who sacrifice for their families and still find time to make a difference in their communities. Using the theme “Moms Rule,” the Dollar General “Every Day Heroes®” campaign will also honor moms by offering great savings for the heroes closest to our hearts.

In exchange for sharing the "Moms Rule" promotion, I received a great prize pack that included a Venus Embrace razor, Secret Outlast deodorant, Vidal Sassoon gel and a Dollar General gift card.

To celebrate and honor moms, Dollar General chose Maria Segura as its Every Day Hero for May 2013. Maria exemplifies the Dollar General Every Day Hero through her commitment to build a better life for her family through literacy and education. Maria was a migrant worker and through The Family Literacy Academy of Immokalee in Florida, she earned her GED and was able to offer her two younger children a better future. Today, Maria is the heart and soul of the program and donates much of her time to visiting families and assisting them with any needs they may have.

Children Grow So Quickly - Then & Now Photos!

I know that kids grow and change so fast. We always say to enjoy every moment because of that reason. I have some photos of my children together with the same object and you can REALLY see the differences and changes that have gone through.

It's amazing and makes me a little sad to see these side by side. My kids aren't babies anymore. BUT, I know that no matter how old they get, in my heart, they will ALWAYS be my babies!

Then & Now photos...

2005 (1 1/2 and 4 1/2 years old)

2008 (4 1/2 and 7 1/2 years old)

2009 (5 1/2 and 8 1/2 years old)

Don't blink... they grow way to quickly!

These were taken at the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse visitor center in Newport, Oregon.   I'm hoping that my kids will get back up there one more time this summer for one more picture.  They will be 9 1/2 and 12 1/2 on our next visit.

Smooth Fitness 7.35 Treadmill Review

Nine months ago I began my weight loss journey with three goals in mind: to lose weight, get fit, and be healthier!  When I was offered the chance to review a treadmill two months ago I jumped at the opportunity!  I had always wanted a treadmill at home and was thrilled to be given the opportunity to incorporate a new workout into my weekly routine.

I received an amazing award winning Smooth Fitness folding treadmill in exchange for my participation in the #SmoothBlogger program and updates of my personal experience over the course of 4 months.

"Smooth Fitness redesigned the 7.35 smooth treadmill with externally positioned frame supports to increase stability and help distribute weight more evenly.

With an extra-large running surface (20 inches x 62 inches) and exclusive im-pression shock absorption cushioning system, this treadmill provides ultimate comfort.  Making this among one of the best treadmills for exercising and training at home."

I LOVE the walking surface.  It is long enough and wide enough that I feel completely comfortable.  I don't worry about falling off as I'm walking or jogging... even if I fall a little behind, I have plenty or room to pick-up the pace and catch back up!

"Features to maximize your performance and results include 15 levels of incline to increase intensity, the Smooth advanced integrated sound system that comes with speakers to boost your energy level, a convenient soft drop fold to save space and easily store and a a back lit display with 25 challenging programs."

The programs available on this treadmill are absolutely amazing!  Two of my favorites are the speed weight loss and the incline weight loss.  No matter how many times I do them, I know I'm getting a great workout and I can feel it!

Chocolate Peanut Butter - Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth!!

Peanut butter plus chocolate is one of my favorite combinations, it goes together like bread and butter.  When you combine the two of them together the result is sweet, creamy perfection.

In my quest for a slimmer, healthier life I have learned to pay close attention to what I'm eating and my daily intake.  I'm eating low carb foods and lower calorie foods, without having to sacrifice flavor.

Since I love sweets, chocolate peanut butter granola bars and protein bars are among a few of my favorite snacks!  Whether the peanut butter is creamy and smooth or a little nutty, they are satisfying and keep me feeling full until my next meal.

Custom Shirts: Celebrate a Special Event or Show Your Team Spirit!

T-shirts, sweatshirts, graphic shirts... we wear them on a daily basis.  Family reunions, team sports, special occasions... custom shirts are an awesome way to remember and celebrate a special event or show your team spirit. It’s like putting your heart (and support) on your sleeve, um... chest!

I was recently given the opportunity to create a personalized hooded sweatshirt in exchange for my honest review.  BuildASign and EasyCanvasPrints recently launched a new custom t-shirt site, Dress United, where you can design your own personalized shirts, hoodies, and swearthshirts any way you like.

I decided to create a personalized hoodie for my husband to wear to wrestling tournaments to show support for our club.  Our son wrestles and my husband is both a coach and the club president.  So, being able to have a personalized shirt to wear is fun, shows support for our team, and the kids love it!

Earning Money Online: How it Works for Me!

My kids are 12 and 9. I've always been a stay at home mom and have zero regrets. My husband and I sat down and discussed all the options, this was the only way to go for us. Figuring out my salary for working, gas to and from work and other work related expenses... almost my entire paycheck would go to someone else to take care of my children. It just wasn't worth it!

There are several websites where I earn cash, gift cards and freebies. All of which make things stretch further for my family and really make a difference. I use many of my wins and freebies for gift giving. They make the perfect gifts and that's zero money out of my pocket for presents! I also cash in for gift cards that enable me to take the kids to the movies and do extra things for fun. Also free for us!

I use coupons as often as I can and combine them with sales and clearance. Last September, the small bags of Goldfish crackers were on sale at Albertson's for $1 and I had (74) $1/1 Goldfish cracker coupons. I got 74 bags for $4.44 - I just had to pay the tax. Right now, we have 4 bags left! LOL!

I buy all my kids clothes on clearance and off season. I got winter coats a couple months ago for next year and paid just $10 each. They were normally $90 - $120 each.

I sell lots of clothes, toys, etc. that the kids no longer use, need or can wear on Craigslist and Shop N' Swap. No shipping fees to take away from your profit like selling on Ebay.

Here are my favorite websites (all of them are free, easy and really DO pay):

The soft side is extra cozy, which provides an inviting place for lounging or tummy time.  In addition, mombo offers a unique vibration feature to give baby extra soothing while relaxing.

mombo from Comfort & Harmonyis one of those must-have baby items because its reversible and has multiple uses!  Whether you're feeding your little one, have them on their tummy for floor time, or napping - mombo does it all!

Our Favorite Summer Activity: Outdoor Camping!

Next to boating, camping is one of our favorite summer activities!  The beautiful scenery and peaceful surroundings are like no other.  The only noises you hear are the laughter of the children, the breeze through the trees, chirping birds and the sound of the bubbly creek.
Nature hikes, campfires, bug catching and roasting marshmallows are a few of our favorite camping activities!

We enjoy just being able to sit back and relax.  No worries, no company, no phone calls... nothing that has to be done at any certain time of the day.

We never watch the clock or know what time it is.  We eat when we are hungry.  Go to bed when we get tired, usually way after dark!

My ldeal Family Vacation Getaway

Family vacations have always been important to my family, from the time I was a little girl.  Even after all these years, I remember how much fun family vacations were when I was a kid.  Now, as a mother, I get to share and create those same family memories with my children.

My ideal family getaway is quite simple, anywhere together creates the ultimate getaway in my opinion.  Whether we are spending a lazy weekend at home, going camping in the great outdoors or spending a week at the Oregon Coast.  Each one of these is special in it's own way and will create lasting memories for our family.

As a kid, we would go on a drive every Sunday, all year long.  I remember we would always stop and buy snacks and drinks, then start driving.  My dad would ask us where we wanted to go... we would say, left or right and that's the way we would go.  We did that one Spring Break as well, we ended up in Chicago at the zoo.  What a long trip that was, but it was a blast!

Frugal Family Fun - Spending Quality Time Together!

It is important to teach children to be frugal from a young age. One way to do so is to keep your family fun activities simple. You can enjoy quality time together without spending a lot of money (or perhaps by spending nothing at all).

Family game or movie night. Make it a tradition and bring on the snacks. Let each family member take turns choosing the activity to keep everyone happy. Some may prefer a family challenge in Scrabble while others will be more excited to see the Toy Story trilogy.

Picnic at a park. You can always feed the ducks while you're there. All it takes is a few pieces of bread or some popcorn. Or why not picnic in your own backyard? Take a blanket, picnic lunch, and frisbee or a book for some real homegrown fun.

Tips For Getting Away With Great Family Travel Deals

I have shared stories about my frugal family vacations in the past.  For the past 5 summers, I have been able to take my family on vacation completely funded by my online earnings.  Family vacations are always fun and memorable, but FREE vacations are even better!

Here are 10 of my favorite ways to save on travel:
  1. Plan Early!  Planning early is probably the biggest money saving tip that I can share!  If you plan your vacation in advance, often times the prices are lower and the deals are better.  Last year we reserved and paid for our Oregon beach house rental in February and got winter rates.  Even though we didn't vacation until August.
  2. Kids Eat Free!  Look for family friendly restaurants where kids eat free.  Even if that opportunity is only available one day a week, you can save money.  So many restaurants offer that deal and it can really pay off.
  3. Eat Dinner Early!  Many restaurants offer a lunch menu price on their meals if you eat before 4pm.  Plant to eat an early dinner and save!  The portions are still the same but the price is often $2 - $5 cheaper per meal.
  4. Travel Off Season!  Prices are always more expensive during holidays (Spring Break especially) and the summer months.  By traveling during the "off season" you can save a bundle, often 50% or more.  Your family will have a blast no matter what time of the year you travel.
  5. Pack a Cooler!  Whenever we travel, we take a cooler full of drinks and snacks with us.  It's so much cheaper to buy drinks in advance rather than purchasing them when you stop at gas stations and convenience stores along your trip.  Buy a case of water or juice boxes and take them along.  A bag of ice every couple of days will keep them cold and save you a bundle!

Sparkle Farms Bloomer Shorts: Keep Your Daughter's Bottom Covered!

From the very first time my daughter wore a dress at just a few weeks old, I loved the matching bloomers that went underneath.  Ruffles on the bottom, keeping her diaper covered and just the added cuteness!   As she grew older, keeping her bottom covered when she wore dresses was even more important.

As a playground monitor at an elementary school, I'm always shocked at just how many little girls don't wear any type of shorts or bloomers underneath their dresses to keep their underwear and bottoms covered while they are swinging, doing cartwheels and crossing the monkey bars!

I'm one of those moms that always makes sure my daughter has everything covered, especially at school and on the playground!  We recently received a set of 3 bloomer shorts from Sparkle Farms, just in time to wear with her Spring and Summer outfits.

The first thing I noticed about these bloomer shorts were just how cute, soft and comfortable they were.  My daughter loved how they felt and how they fit.  They were super soft, moved with her and fit snug and perfectly!  She also loved that they came in her favorite colors and had "bling" on them!

They are perfect for wearing underneath her dresses or with her longer shirts.  Short enough to act as a cover-up underneath dresses but long enough to cover what's important!  They are great for her to wear during playtime, sports and even to bed!

One Step at a Time: I Completed my First Fun Run of the Year!

My nine year old daughter and I completed our first fun run of the year over the weekend.  We woke up bright and early on Saturday morning with a goal in mind, and we were determined to succeed.  I have been training at home on my Smooth Fitness treadmill and was eager to see how I could do out on the open road.

My treadmill has several different programs that can help you prepare and train.   Whether it's a walk in the park or a hike in the mountains you can record your favorite workout and repeat it as many times as you like. As your fitness level changes you can modify these programs to meet your specific needs.  Different speeds, inclines, and endurance levels make reaching your full potential well within your reach.

I knew that running outside was going to be different than the jogging I had been doing on my treadmill, but I was hopeful that my hard work was going to pay off.  The fun run was 3.1 miles and my daughter and I set out to see just how far we could run...

Are you one of today's lucky winners?

It's National Boys & Girls Club Week: Open the Door to a Child's Future!

As a mother, it's important to me that my children have access to programs that will encourage and support their dreams and ambitions.  Every parent wants their child to flourish, be happy and follow their dreams.

I'm a firm believer that it is extremely important to make learning fun.  Letting children experiment, trouble shoot, and get involved with hands on learning can make a world of difference!

I recently learned that nearly 4,000 Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the United States, its territories and on U.S. military installations around the world open their doors to help youth find their great futures. Through fun, educational and innovative programs, their Clubs help kids and teens meet their full potential.

Did you know that April 7th – 13th is National Boys & Girls Club Week?  As part of the special celebration you are invited to "Open The Door & Take Take The Tour" and take part in the Blue Door Decorating Duel where you can vote for your favorite decorated BGCA blue door. Sky High Sports Indoor Trampoline Fun Center: Spokane - Let Your Kids Bounce Off the Walls!

My kids are on Spring Break this week so finding fun things to keep them busy is at the top of my priority list.  Yesterday we decided to go somewhere that we had never gone before... Sky High SportsWe had seen commercials on t.v., heard about it from friends and looked at photos and videos on Facebook.   The kids had asked several times in the past to go, but things just never worked out... until this week!

The kids were SO excited to go to Sky High Sports with their friends that they woke up earlier than normal.  They quickly ate breakfast, got dressed, fed the dogs and were ready to go 2 hours before we were leaving.  If only they would get ready that quickly and easily every morning...

There were 6 of us in our "party," my son and one of his friends, my daughter, her best friend, her mom and myself!  When we arrived we had to check-in with our basic information (name, DOB, address) on their computer since we were first time jumpers.  We then moved to the front desk where you pay and sign the liability waivers.  The entire process was quick and easy, and the staff was very friendly.

The front lobby area is very large and inviting with couches, tables and chairs, arcade games, vending machines, bathrooms, water fountains, and the Sky High Cafe

When the kids saw the main trampoline area their eyes got so big and they couldn't get out there fast enough!

After about 20 minutes of jumping, flipping, laughing and bouncing off the walls... literally, we decided to explore and see what else there was to do.

There are four other trampoline areas: one was for dodgeball, one was for kids 8 and under, another was the foam pit and the last one was closed while we were there.  There were also a few other areas with tables, comfy couches and televisions for people to sit and relax.
